Non-judgement is at the core of any good therapists Jedi mind tricks, but why are we so susceptible to their magic?
They make you feel heard, understood and validated. This must say something about how you felt beforehand. Unheard? Misunderstood? Invalidated?
The world is full of people who don’t listen, because they don’t know how to not judge.
Judgement is a natural part of being human
Not only is it natural, it’s critical!
Judgement is what makes your smart phone work. It helps us work together and get incredible things done. It’s baked into language and decisions at an even biological level. Yet in order to heal our pain, we’ve got to find our way around judgement.
Even though it’s natural, it often interrupts our ability to make people feel seen and heard.
Giving non-judgement to others requires giving it to yourself
Because it’s so unnatural to resist problem solving, solution seeking, giving advice, etc. it’s incredibly difficult to learn.
You’ll have to make mistakes, correct and repeat many times. You’ll find the exercise of learning non-judgement for others will give plenty of chances to apply it for yourself!
But once you can figure it out, true listening offers a skillset that will set you apart from others in everything you do.
